Rhabdomyosarcoma Overview: Rhabdo is a rare form of cancer affecting the connective tissues in our body. It can also be found in muscle tissue and wrapped around our organs. It is found most often in children in the 2 forms; embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. It is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children.

Rhabdo Diagnosis: Determining a case of rhabdo is dependent on the recognition of differentiation of the skeletal muscle cells. Early manifestation can be easily misdiagnosed as a tumor. Testing of the blood, muscle, and bone marrow should be conducted for confirmation when rhabdomyosarcoma is suspected.

Treatment of Rhabdo: There are several treatment methods for rhabdomyosarcoma. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery are all options used to fight rhabdo. Amputation is sometimes required if a tumor is found in the extremities. The combination of all options offer the best prognosis. Patients that begin treatment before metastasis can live much longer than those who do not.
